Matilda Lane was born Matilda Lingard on 14 July 1859 in Christchurch, New Zealand to James Lingard and his wife Martha Ellmers.  They had married on 24 December 1855 in Lyttleton.

In 1882 Matilda married Samuel Lane in the residence of Rev N B Redstone, Methodist Minister in Christchurch.  They had three children.

In 1893 and 1896 the electoral rolls record Matilda and family living in Roxburgh Street, Wellington.  By 1905 the family had moved to Fallowfield Avenue, Wellington East. 

In 1911 they were living at number 9 and in 1914 they had moved to number 11 Fallowfield Avenue.

Matilda died on 12 September 1925 age 66 years in Wellington and is buried in the Karori cemetery, Wellington, Rom Cath/P/185.

Samuel died on 25 December 1935 age 77 years at the residence of a son A R Lane, Petone and is buried with his wife in the same plot in Karori cemetery.  Samuel was a Blacksmith.
