The family travelled to Australia and, in 1862, Matilda, her mother and brother travelled from Melbourne to Invercargill on the Lady Bird.
She married Nelson William Paul, a carrier, in 1876. They had five children.
Nelson died at Omakau in Otago in 1912. Matilda died on 16 June 1921 at her daughter’s home in Balclutha. They are both buried in the Omakau Cemetery.
