Matilda Jennings was born in 1847 in Helston, Cornwall, England – the daughter of Thomas Hockin Jennings, a master cabinetmaker, and Mary Ann Carlyon.
She emigrated to Otago in 1861 with her family on the Chile.
The family settled in Dunedin & Matilda married Frederick Thompson, a labourer, there on 5 July 1873.
They had nine children, one was stillborn and two died in infancy.
Frederick died in 1901, he is buried in the Southern Cemetery with members of Matilda’s family.
Matilda died on 22 June 1918 and she is buried with her son and brother in the Northern Cemetery.
