May Wood was born about 1838.

She married Alexander Byars, a farmer, in 1867 and they had five children.

They farmed at Mayfield at Chatton, north of Gore, where May signed the suffrage petition.

She died at her home on 18 April 1899 and Alexander died in 1910 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
