Biographical information provided for the He Tohu exhibition:

May Cairns Domigan was born in 1858 to Margaret (nee Dron) and John Hastie of Hurunui. She was one of four children. In March 1890 she married William Domigan, described as an outfitter, in Dunedin. They had three sons and a daughter between 1891 and 1895.

Both son William James and husband William fought in the First World War, her husband as Captain, later Major, of the 8th Regiment, Southland Rifles. May, William and family lived variously in Mataura, Gore, Oroua (Manawatu-Wanganui), Dunedin, Welllington and the Wairarapa. She died three days after her husband in 1935, at the age of 77, and they are buried at the Taita Old Cemetery.
