Mary Martha (or May) Goodeve was born in Chithurst, Sussex (England) in 1871, the eldest daughter of Francis and Jane Goodeve (nee Duddy). When she was nine May was a boarder at Lyndale House, a school in Midhurst, Sussex while her family lived at Ferncliff, Petersfield, Southhampton.

May immigrated to New Zealand with her parents and two siblings sometime between 1885 and 1890, and lived in Serpentine Ave, Dunedin. She married a teacher named John Rogerson Montgomery in 1899. They settled in Geraldine and had Kenneth Milne (1899-1952), Alan Yalden (1902-), Phyllis Barr (1904-), Evelyn Marshall (1909-) and Celia Rose Hartwell (1916-1991).

May died in 1928, aged 57 years.
