Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Jane Murdock/Minnie Alley was born about 1859 in Ireland – the daughter of George Alley, a Methodist minister, and Mary Jane Murdock.

She married Hugh McCleery, a draper, on 26 August 1884 in Belfast and they emigrated to New Zealand shortly after.

They had seven children, one who died in infancy and when Minnie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Outram, West Taieri and Hugh was working as a storekeeper.

They moved to the Pleasant Point area in Canterbury in the mid 1900s.

Mary died in November 1934 and Hugh died in 1935, they are buried together in the Timaru Cemetery.
