Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Wilhelmina Elizabeth/Minnie Mowat was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Mowat, a farmer, and Diana Calder.

She married Charles Bowtell Smith, a bookbinder, at her parent’s home in Mataura on 28 December 1888.

They had seven children and when Minnie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Dowling St, Dunedin.

James died in 1932 and Minnie died on 11 July 1946, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
