Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Harriet Wilhelmina/Minnie Warnes was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Warnes and Eliza Ann Wenlock. (See 534 E A Warnes

Minnie was a member of the Salvation Army & when she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Melville St, Dunedin.

Also signing beside her was fellow Officer Kate Astley. (See 63 Kate Astley)

In June 1894 Minnie married William Lee Martin, a painter and also a Salvation Army Officer.

'Despite the wretched weather, the Salvation Army Fortress in Dowling St was crowded...When the marriage party entered the fortress they were greeted by a 'volley' from the band'. After their marriage the couple proceded to Oamaru where they were to be stationed –they had seven children, one who died in infancy.

They later lived in Wellington, Whanganui and Matangi in the Waikato where they had a farm.

William served two terms as a Member of Parliament – he died in 1950 and Harriet died in December 1955, they are buried together in the Hamilton East Cemetery.
