Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Annie Smith was born in Victoria, Australia in 1861 – the daughter of Robert Smith, a miner, and Mary Leahy.
She came to the West Coast with her family as a young child and they settled in Stafford.
When Annie signed the suffrage petition she was in Greymouth possibly living with her sister in law. (See 246 C Smith)
In 1905 she left Greymouth to live in Whanganui where her mother and sister were living.
'Yesterday afternoon at the close of the Sunday School' Annie was presented 'with an address and a handsome silver-mounted mirror' and in the evening a further presentation was made on behalf of the church choir. She was also the guest of honour at a gathering of her friends where she was presented with 'a handsome gold and greenstone necklet'.
It is not known what happened to Annie after her arrival in Whanganui.
