Edith Mary Dowden was born in 1862 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Edwin Atchley Dowden, a stock inspector, and Mary Louisa Lambert. (See 56 Mrs Dowden)

Edith came to New Zealand with her family about 1874 and, when she signed the suffrage petition, she was living in George St, Dunedin with her family.

She married John Griffiths, a seaman, in 1913 and she died on 23 December 1926.

John died in 1934, they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery, Wellington.
