Margaret Ferguson was born on 2 January 1852 in Fifeshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Ferguson, a sawyer, and Christina Lyell.

Margaret emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1880s with her widowed father and siblings.

When she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her sister Catherine (See 62 Miss Kate Ferguson) in Cameron St, South Dunedin.

She did not marry and she died on 4 June 1919, she is buried with her father and sister in the Southern Cemetery.
