Biographical information provided for the He Tohu exhibition:

Born in New Zealand in 1863, Edwin Charles Hocking was a gardener. Men were generally not encouraged to sign the Petition, as the idea was to show that women wanted the vote – but some still did. Edwin’s wife, Christina, also signed the Petition, as Mrs E. C. Hocking. She died prematurely in 1898 at the age of 32.
