Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Euphemia Clunie Peat was born about 1846 in Fifeshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Peat and Cecilia Mitchell.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1860 on the Pladda. Euphemia married Alexander Kilgour, a baker, on 13 May 1862 in the East Taieri Presbyterian Church. They had 10 children and during their married life lived in Tapanui, Balclutha, Oamaru, Alexandra, and then finally in Dunedin where they retired. Their daughter, Agnes Brown, also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
On 20 September 1911, Euphemia’s photo appeared in the Otago Witness with her daughter, grand-daughter and great grand-daughter.
Euphemia and Alexander celebrated their Pearl wedding anniversary (65 years) in 1927 and 150 friends and relatives gathered to mark the occasion.
Alexander died in 1932 and Euphemia died on 27 November 1936. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
