Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sophie Collenette was born on 18 September 1837 in Guernsey – the daughter of Thomas Collenette, a plasterer, Marthe Drillot.

She sailed for South Australia with her family in 1853 on the Neptune and she married, joiner, William Anderson in Victoria in 1860.

They had a daughter the following year before they came to Otago where they had a further six children, one who died in infancy.

William died in 1883 'after a long and painful illness' and when Sophie signed the suffrage petition she was living in Howe St, Dunedin making her living as a storekeeper.

She died at her home on 11 October 1907 and is buried with William in the Northern Cemetery.
