Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Jeffrey was born about 1853 in Berkshire, England.
She married Epenetus John (John) Arnold, a labourer, in 1872 and they had one son before they emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Tweed.
They had a further eight children after their arrival and lived, at first, in Waimate before moving to Lawrence where Jane signed the suffrage petition and John worked as a bricklayer.
John died in Lawrence in 1928 and Jane died on 19 July 1935, they are buried together in the Lawrence Cemetery.
Her obituary said she 'was a highly esteemed resident. She possessed in a marked degree, all the attributes that made a good citizen and was typical of the early settlers'.
