Barbara Patrick was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Patrick, a hotelkeeper, and Barbara McLeod.
Barbara married James Bennet, a gold dredge operator, on 8 April 1887 and they had nine children.
When Barbara signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Millers Flat in Central Otago.
They moved to Kumara on the West Coast in the late 1890s where Barbara died on 19 May 1908 – she is buried in the Kumara Cemetery.
James re-married in 1910, he died in 1923 and is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
