Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Shorthose was born in Derbyshire, England about 1828 – the daughter of Robert Shorthose, a farmer, and Catherine Smith.

She married farm bailiff, Charles Bates on 25 November 1857 at Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire and they had seven children.

In 1873 the family boarded the Edwin Fox bound for Otago – their son Charles died shortly after their arrival in Dunedin.

They settled in Caversham where Charles worked as a gardener and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Sydney Street.

Elizabeth died at her home on 13 January 1911 and Charles died the following year – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
