Elizabeth Nuttall was born about 1832 in Burnley, Lancashire – the daughter of Henry Nuttall, a shoemaker, and Sarah.
She married, coal miner, Matthew Batty on 20 January 1855 and they had a daughter before they sailed for New Zealand in the late 1850s.
They had a further five children and lived, at first, in Westport before moving to the Greymouth district where Matthew was involved in opening the Brunner mine. They later developed a dairy farm at Coal Creek where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.
Matthew died in 1900 – he is buried in the Karoro Cemetery.
Elizabeth died in Nelson on 28 August 1908 – she is buried in the Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson.
