Elizabeth Brown was born about 1859 in County Durham.
She married, lead miner, Jacob Baty in 1879 and soon after they boarded the Margaret Galbraith bound for Otago.
They had nine children and lived in Dunedin until the mid 1880s when they moved to the West Coast.
Jacob worked on the construction of the Cobden bridge before they moved to Coal Creek to take up farming.
Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition in Cobden.
In 1920 they retired to Christchurch but later returned to Coal Creek where Jacob died in 1931.
Elizabeth died at her son’s home in Coal Creek on 3 November 1942 – she is buried with Jacob in the Karoro Cemetery.
Her obituary said 'she and her husband were among the earliest members of the Methodist Church, in which they took a lifelong interest'.
