Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Cook was born about 1832 in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
She married Thomas Raiker, a ship’s carpenter, on 6 July 1851 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire and they had four children.
Jane emigrated to Wellington in 1879 on the Rakaia as a Colonial Nominated Immigrant, accompanied by her youngest daughter Ann.
Thomas’ death is registered in 1882 in New Zealand and, on 9 February 1884, Jane re-married at Port Chalmers near Dunedin to John Best, a sea captain.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Alexandra St, Caversham, Dunedin.
After this their movements are unclear.
