Lavinia Amelia Smith was born in New Zealand in 1865 – the daughter of Furneaux Smith, a gold miner, and Anna Maria Pratt.

In 1883 Lavinia married William Henry Burrows, a carter. They had eight children.

William died in Ravensbourne, Dunedin in 1925 and Lavinia died on 19 November 1943 in Christchurch.
