Sarah Carlin was born about 1849 in Glasgow, Scotland. She emigrated to Otago with her husband John in 1875 on the Nelson.

They had no children. When she signed the suffrage petition Sarah was living in Maori Rd, Dunedin, working as a weaver. John died at Maori Rd in 1906 from cirrhosis of the liver and heart disease. Sarah died on 27 October 1926. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
