Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Catherine Petrie was born about 1825 in Aberdeen, Scotland – the daughter of George Petrie and Margaret Gunn.

She married Joseph Scott, a baker, in 1852 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. They had two daughters before they emigrated to New Zealand in about 1855. Another six children were born after their arrival.

Catherine and Joseph lived in Wellington at first, then travelled south and followed the gold rushes before finally settling in Wetherstones, near Lawrence in Central Otago.

When she signed the suffrage petition Catherine was a widow living in Duncan St, Dunedin – her occupation was nurse. Her daughter Margaret also signed the petition.

She died at Duncan St on 15 April 1905. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery with one of her daughters.
