Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Haugh was born about 1843 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Haugh, a ploughman, and Agnes Porter.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the 1860’s and they settled in Otaria in Southland.

Jane married Robert Couperthwaite, a farmer, on 27 July 1867 and they had nine children.

By the time that Jane signed the suffrage petition the family had moved to Gore.

They then shifted to Kelso where Jane died on 24 September 1912 and Robert died the following year – they are buried together in the Tapanui Cemetery.
