Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Mary McAslan was born in 1843 in Glasgow – the daughter of Robert McAslan, a shawl printer, and Grace McNair.

Her mother died when she was young and her father remarried before the family emigrated to Otago in the mid-1860s.

Janet married, clerk, Robert Wilson Crawfurd on 11 October 1871 in Dunedin.

They had six children, one who died in infancy, before Robert died in 1883.

When Janet signed the suffrage petition she was living in Bathgate St, South Dunedin working as a tailoress.

She died on 6 March 1926 and is buried with Robert in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
