Biography contributed by Clare Cramond

Mrs Crombie signed the Petition, giving her address as Wellesley Street. A Mrs Margaret Crombie (shopkeeper) and William Anderson Crombie (an accountant) from Wellesley Street were listed on the 1893 Electoral Roll. As the only Crombies from this street, it is likely this is Mrs Crombie who signed the Petition.

Margaret and William were married in 1892, and Margaret’s former surname was given as Reid. They were both in their 40s. A birth notice in the Auckland Star in August 1894 says 'At Wellesley street Mrs WA Crombie of a son (still-born)'. She is also recorded in the papers for giving donations of food to the Jubilee Kindergarten.

A New Zealand Herald marriage notice for Louisa Reid Crombie in 1908 says she is the daughter of W.A. Crombie of Mount Albert. She may be Margaret’s daughter and William’s stepdaughter. She married David Dustin from Wanganui.

Both Margaret and William are listed on later electoral rolls living in Mount Albert. William died in 1919, aged 71 and Margaret died in Wanganui in October 1933 aged 86. They are buried together in the Waikomiti (Waikumete) Cemetery.
