What do you know?

I have been researching a group of Ayrshire miners hired in 1853 by the Hudson's Bay Company for the coal mines in Nanaimo BC. They got off the ship Colinda in Chile and I believe Mary Bowes was one of them, then married to Joseph Featherstone. I would like to contact David Adams and exchange information.

Mary Cuthill nee Bowes was my great-great-great-grandmother. She came from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in Scotland and was born about 1838. In the 1851 census she is listed as a bonnet weaver. She married John Cuthill in Valparaiso, Chile on 15th April 1855. They had four children, two died in infancy. John died in 1873 in Valparaiso. Mary took her daughters Jane (aka Wheneta) and Helen to NZ in 1874 sailing on the 'Timaru' from Scotland. She remarried but was soon separated and reverted to her earlier married name Cuthill. She owned and ran a hosiery factory in Lees St, Dunedin. She died on the 5th March 1901 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery of Dunedin.
