Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Dorothy Jacques was born in Northumberland, England in 1850 – the daughter of Andrew Jacques, a coal miner, and Elizabeth Parker.

She married William Blackie, also a coal miner, in 1867 and they had six children before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1880.

They settled in Dunedin and had a further seven children which included two sets of twins.

When Dorothy signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, South Dunedin and William was working as a coal dealer.

He died in 1899 and Dorothy died at their daughter’s home on 27 February 1922. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
