Martha Hillhouse was born on 6 September 1859 in Riccarton, Ayr, Scotland – the daughter of William Hillhouse, a coal pitheadman, and Janet Greer.

She emigrated to Otago in 1879 on the Nelson and she married James Davidson, a carpenter and storekeeper, on 22 July 1881 in Dunedin.

They had six children, one who died in infancy, and when Martha signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Neidpath Rd, Mornington, Dunedin.

In the 1910s they moved to Auckland where Martha died on 8 July 1914.

James re-married the following year – he died in 1917 in Auckland. They are both buried in the Waikumete Cemetery.
