Mary Ryan was born about 1847 in Ireland, she emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860s and married Robert Dow, a railway porter, on 22 February 1878.

They had seven children and, when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cargill Rd, South Dunedin.

Robert died in 1919 and Mary died on 14 June 1930, they are buried with their son in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
