Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Alexander was born on 11 March 1820 in Barry, Forfarshire, Scotland – the daughter of Patrick Alexander and Isobel Nicol.

She married Robert Dow, a carpenter, on 28 January 1844 in Blairgowrie, Perthshire.

They had nine children, two of who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1864 on the Gala.

The family settled in Duncan St, Dunedin where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

Robert died at his home in 1883 and Mary died on 13 November 1903. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
