Mary McLaren was born about 1862 in Victoria, Australia.

She came to New Zealand about 1884 and married William Alexander Duncan, bootmaker, on 11 June 1885 in Dunedin.

They had five children, two who died in childhood, and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Dundas St, Dunedin.

Mary died on 4 June 1919 and William died in 1949. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
