Biographical information provided by Lisa Austin for the He Tohu exhibition:

Elizabeth Ann Bjermqvist was married to August Wilhelm Bjermqvist who came to New Zealand c.1874-75 from Sundavell, Sweden. They had two children, Charles Henry and Nellie. The children attended Troy St Infants School and both won prizes in December 1887.

In 1887 August had a judgement recorded in the local magistrates court, the outcome is unknown. In 1888 Elizabeth lost a civil case in the local magistrates court and was ordered to pay £2 1s to E Lawson or face 3 days imprisonment.

August was killed on a steamer berthed in Invercargill on 15 July 1889 when timber fell on him in the hold. Elizabeth died in Wellington hospital on 22 March 1937 aged 80, she was survived by her daughter. She is buried in Karori Cemetery.
