Biographical information provided for the He Tohu exhibition:

Christina Hocking, who signed the Petition as Mrs E. C. Hocking, was married to a gardener named Edwin Charles Hocking who also signed the Petition. Men were generally not encouraged to sign the Petition, as the idea was to show that women wanted the vote – but some like Edwin still did. Christina died prematurely in 1898, aged 32.
