Mrs E J Hosking was born Emily Jane Hosking on 10 March 1862, Illogan, Cornwall, England to John Hosking and his wife Jane Hosking nee Thomas.

The 1871 census for Illogan, Cornwall records Emily J Hosking aged 9 years living with her widowed Mother Jane Hosking aged 35 years, Dressmaker, in Robartes Terrace.

Emily J Hosking, her Mother Jane Hosking, sister Mrs Elizabeth Ann Thomas Johns and brother-in-law Frederick Johns left Plymouth, England on 1 July 1875 and arrived in Timaru on 24 September 1875 on the ship Merope.

Emily Jane Hosking married James Henry Hosking on 23 August 1879 in Christchurch.

Emily and James had 10 children; Emily Mabel Hosking born 1879 [father not named but likely to be James]; Ethel Minnie Hosking born 1881; Elizabeth Emily Hosking born 1883; James Henry Hosking born 1885; George Thomas Hosking born 1887; Frank Harold Holm Hosking born 1889; Alma Florence Berry Hosking born 1890; Isabella Gertrude Hosking born 1892; William John Jack Hosking born 1896 and Mary Edna Hosking born 1898.

The electoral roll for 1905-06 records Emily living in Waimate.  In 1911, 1914 and 1919 she is living in Maytown, Waimate and from 1925 until her death at 41 Parsonage Road, Waimate.

James Hosking died on 31 August 1904 aged 48 years and Emily Hosking died on 2 April 1936 aged 74 years.  Both are buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, Plot 182.
