Eliza Smith was born on 27 July 1863 in Woking, Surrey, England – the daughter of David Smith, a nursery labourer, and Jane Searle.
She emigrated to Otago in 1878 on the Piako possibly with her older sister Jane.
Eliza married John Henry Johnstone, a letter carrier, at Knox Church, Dunedin on 8 November 1883 and they had five children.
When Eliza signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Elm Row.
Henry died in 1909 and Eliza died on 27 December 1925, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
