Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Irvine was born about 1833 in Ireland.

She married Charles McSorley, a coal miner, around 1850 and they moved to Scotland.

They had seven children, four who died in infancy or childhood.

They lived in Hamilton, Lanarkshire where Charles died in 1889.

Elizabeth emigrated to Otago in 1891 on the Ruapehu with her 11-year-old granddaughter Lizzie.

When she signed the suffrage petition she was living in South Dunedin.

She died on 1 August 1913 at her granddaughter’s home in Dunedin – she is buried in the Southern Cemetery.
