Biographical information provided for by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:

Elizabeth Eyles was born in Wiltshire in 1832, the eldest of David and Hannah Eyles’s ten children. At the age of 16, Elizabeth emigrated with her family to Australia. Her youngest sister was born on the journey. In 1850, at the age of 18, she married Mark Starbuck, another English migrant. Their only child, Laura, was born the same year.

In 1863, the family migrated to New Zealand, arriving in Dunedin, and settling in Southland, where they had a farm. Elizabeth died in 1896, aged 64.
