Mary Cartwright was born in 1854 in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England, the daughter of Thomas Cartwright, a gardener, and Catherine Brown.
She moved to Wales with her family about 1860 and she married Edwin William Brooke, a coal miner, in 1875.
They had 3 children before the family sailed for New Zealand on the Piako.
They settled at Shag Point in North Otago and had a further 10 children.
Mary signed the suffrage petition in nearby Palmerston.
Edwin died in Dunedin in March 1924 and Mary died at Shag Point later that year on May 15th.
They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
