Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Kinloch was born on 11 November 1821 in Methven, Perthshire, Scotland- the daughter of John Kinloch, an agricultural labourer, and Christian Sword.

She married Alexander Cumming, a farmer, on 15 September 1839 in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire and they had 11 children, one who appears to have died in infancy.

The family emigrated to Otago in the early 1870s and they settled in Wairuna in South Otago where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.

Her daughter Ann (See 110 Ann Cumming) and granddaughter Elizabeth (See 110 Elizabeth Cumming) also signed the petition at Wairuna.

Alexander died in 1895 and Elizabeth died on 19 June 1900, they are buried in the family grave in the Clinton Cemetery.

Elizabeth’s obituary said she 'had enjoyed the best of health up to a short time before her death. Being of a quiet disposition, she was loved and respected by all, and by her death the district has lost one of its fast-diminishing old identities'.
