Eleanor/Ellen Dixon was born in East Holywell, Northumberland, England about 1845. She married Henry Grainger, a carpenter, in 1866.

They had three children, one dying in infancy, before they emigrated to Otago on the Nelson in 1875. Three more children were born in New Zealand, and a son died in infancy.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Bradshaw St, South Dunedin and Henry was working as a tinsmith.

Henry died at Bradshaw St in 1898 and Ellen died at her daughter’s home in Cargill Rd, South Dunedin on 30 October 1919. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
