Josephine Montgomery was born about 1825.
She married, farmer, Samuel Brown and, by the mid-1850’s they were living in Bullock Creek in Victoria, Australia.
In mid-December 1856 Samuel was reported missing. Several days later his body was found in a water hole by some gold diggers.
Josephine sold the farm in 1857 and she re-married on 1 October 1859.
She married Samuel Espie at St James Cathedral in Melbourne and they had three sons.
By the time that Josephine signed the suffrage petition the family had moved to New Zealand and Josephine was living with her son in Cumberland St, Dunedin while Samuel was farming at, nearby, Pine Hill.
Samuel died in 1913 in Wellington – he is buried in the Karori Cemetery.
Josephine returned to Victoria where she died at her son’s home on 4 July 1904 – she is buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.
