Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emma Elizabeth Mickerson was born in 1851 in London – the daughter of James George Mickerson, a waterman, and Emma Baity.

Emma emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 on the Chile and she married Frederick Allen, a teacher, the following year in Wellington.

When Emma signed the suffrage petition they were living in Colac Bay – they later moved to Karitane, north of Dunedin before moving back to England in the late 1890s.

Frederick died in 1916 and Emma died on 8 January 1931.

Under the terms of Frederick’s will a large amount of money was left to the hospitals of New Zealand.
