Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Fanny Garlick was born about 1823 in Swinefleet, Yorkshire, England – the daughter of Henry Garlick and Ann.

She married bricklayer James Wilson in 1842 and they had five children, four who appear to have died in infancy.

In 1855 Fanny and John accompanied by their daughter Hannah emigrated to Victoria, Australia on the Epsom.

They had a further four children in Victoria before they sailed for New Zealand and settled in Dunedin where their last two children were born.

When Fanny signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Castle Street.

James died in 1896 and Fanny died on 10 June 1897 at her daughter’s home in Dunedin – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
