Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Hannah Graham was born on 7 May 1828 in Maybole, Ayrshire in Scotland – the daughter of John Graham, a cotton handloom weaver, and Jean Elizabeth Niven.

She married George Fergusson, a weaver, on 31 December 1851 in Maybole. They had 13 children, four who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Timaru, by this time George’s occupation was a baker.

They settled in Dunedin and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition they were living in Cumberland Street.

Sarah died at her home on 1 December 1899 and George died in 1916 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
