Sarah Ann Eccles was born in New Zealand in 1864 – the daughter of Joshua Eccles, a hotel keeper and grocer, and Susan Slon.
Sarah married Donald Finlayson, a dredge hand, on 19 December 1889 at Arthur St, Dunedin. They had five children and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family was living in Russell St, Dunedin.
Donald was accidentally drowned in 1911 and Sarah Ann died on 14 January 1924. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
