Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Mary Pettigrew was born about 1839 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

She married James Fleming on 31 December 1856 and they had three children, one who died in infancy.

The family emigrated to Otago in 1861 on the Storm Cloud and they had a further five children.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maclaggan St, Dunedin although James appears to have left the family by this time.

Mary died on 4 August 1912 – she is buried in the Southern Cemetery.
