Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes McMillan married John Forsyth, a painter, in Dunedin on 25 November 1864.

They had 10 children, one who died in infancy.

When Agnes signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leith Street, Dunedin.

Over the following few years the family suffered many tragedies. In 1895 their 15-year-old son Arthur drowned while boating on the harbour with his younger brother and a friend.

Their 19-year-old daughter Leah died in 1898, followed by 30-year-old William in April 1901.

Fifteen-year-old Herbert also died in 1901, on 11 July followed by his father on 23 July.

Agnes was left a widow with four daughters and one son.

She was still alive in 1904 when John’s will was probated but her place and date of death is unknown.
