Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Butchart was born on 12 June 1843 in Montrose, Scotland – the daughter of John Butchart, a floor cloth weaver, and Jane Anderson.

Mary’s mother died in 1877 and, in 1882, she emigrated to Otago with her father and younger sister Jane on the Vallejo

They settled in Dunedin where Mary’s sister Jane married Robert Weir Fullerton, a sailor, in 1883.

She died either in childbirth or shortly after the birth of their son in 1884.

Mary and Robert married in 1886 – they had no children.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Rankeillor St, South Dunedin.

Robert died in 1910 and Mary died at her home on 23 April 1921 – they are buried with Jane in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
